O'BRIEN SUSTAINABLE DREAM HOME This house is designed to limit utility costs for a couple who plan to retire here. The green home will use water harvesting from the standing seam metal roof, photovoltaics for energy and re-use of gray water for toilets and irrigation. Their dream home is not a Mc Mansion that will take extra help to maintain. The plumbing fixtures surfaces and finishes are being chosen to reduce cleaning time.
On the opposite page is an advertisement in the local paper that talks about the project.
Also, we have done some study models to look at the building on the site, roof configuration and solar penetration into the building.
*PASSIVE SOLAR DESIGN* *CONTEXTUAL DESIGN FOR THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY* *ENERGY GENERATION THROUGH SOLAR AND WIND*
The main space and living room will be 15 feet high and have library book cases on one wall. The space will have curved glu-lam beams that arch gracefully over head. The windows on the north west will be shaded from the sun. The view is of the canyon and cedar covered hills beyond.
White O'Mourn has limestone walls and laminated green reflective low-e glazing. The clerestory has clear low-e glazing so the color in the large hall/ library room will have plenty of natural light. At the front awning windows open to the South East breeze to allow the natural current to come into the house. On the North West side the clerestory opens to allow the breeze to come in and up, removing hot air and bringing cool air over the occupants at sitting level. The other windows in the house are casement windows, which are the most effective for catching and bringing in breezes.
